Making the Everyday Extraordinary
This project in Oxford wasn’t just about craftsmanship – it was about reimagining the familiar. The client didn’t just want a staircase that worked; they wanted one that amazed.
Initially, the goal was a smooth scroll terminal – a timeless but common feature. But once we shared our vision for incorporating bespoke carving into the handrail, everything changed. The idea of turning a practical scroll terminal into a sculpted, leaf-carved centrepiece was born.
With support from the designer and trust from the client, we created something rarely seen: a hand-carved scroll with ornamental leaves – unique in every curve and detail.
Client Vision – Something Stunning and Unrepeatable
The homeowners were after a stunning and unusual staircase – something that elevated the entire entrance hall. There was no problem to solve – just an ambition to break away from the ordinary.
They already had handmade iron spindles planned, so we proposed going further with the scroll terminal: not just flowing lines, but something artistic and entirely personal.To complement the dramatic visuals, we used French polishing in a rich, dark brown – a challenging technique that brought out the grain with a luxurious gloss.
Design – Collaboration at Its Best
We worked in close dialogue with the project’s designer and the client. Together, we:
- Refined scroll sketches
- Created handrail profile samples
- Proposed carved motifs based on shared references and inspirations
No ready-made pattern. No standard finish. Just a commitment to originality and harmony.
Materials & Mastery
- Timber: Solid European oak
- Finish: Hand-applied French polish in warm dark brown
- Carving: Leaf detail scroll terminal, custom wreaths with steep-angle transitions
From shaping the scroll to carving uniform leaves on a curved surface, this project demanded total focus and high-level handcraft. The steep 90° transition wreaths between stair flights added to the complexity.
Installation with Precision
The iron spindles (supplied by others) were handmade – each end slightly different. We drilled each spindle hole individually to align the decorative pattern with perfect precision.
The handrails were installed on pre-existing oak stairs, complementing the space with seamless integration.
The Result – Art That Guides You Upward
The result wasn’t just functional. It was sculptural.
