From Disappointment to Distinction
This Putney project began as a single request for bespoke European oak handrails – but quickly became a full staircase transformation. The home’s newly installed softwood stairs didn’t meet the homeowner’s expectations. They looked unfinished and lacked the premium feel expected in such a modern interior.
Rather than replacing the staircase entirely, the client chose a less disruptive solution: full oak staircase cladding paired with handrails designed and installed by RR Interior.

Elevating Expectations – The Client’s Vision
The client wanted a staircase that felt solid, luxurious, and contemporary – a central feature of the home. Their main challenge: the existing stairs were already installed by another contractor in softwood, which looked “cheap” and out of place.
Our solution: transform the structure with solid European oak treads, risers, and strings, and craft a sleek, warm-toned handrail that matched the architecture.
Design Integration That Made It Work
There were no external designers or detailed plans – just clear decisions around material, tone, and proportions. Because the home was nearly finished, we were able to align our design directly with the site style.
- Material: Solid European oak throughout
- Finish: Hand-applied Danish oil
- Profile: Thick treads, minimalist edges, soft transitions
The oak handrail was mounted on a metal core rail, blending modern engineering with artisan warmth.
Craftsmanship That Delivered
RR Interior handled every element:
- Handrail manufacturing, installation, and oil finishing
- Full staircase cladding including treads, risers, strings, and newels
- Recreation of a missing external moulding on a building column
Each piece was cut, shaped, and fitted by hand – maintaining alignment, flow, and flawless joins throughout. The client had high standards. We met every one of them.

The Result – Warm, Modern, and Long-Lasting
The result is a staircase that’s now visually stunning, tactile, and built for the long term. The new oak finish adds warmth and weight, turning an unsatisfying feature into a visual centrepiece.
Functionally, the oak handrail enhances safety and support. Visually, the entire stairway now feels cohesive, refined, and luxurious – exactly what the homeowner hoped for.

Beyond the Brief – Restoration Craft
In addition to the staircase, the client needed a moulding detail recreated for the front column of the building. Our restoration skills allowed us to replicate the missing profile exactly – saving time and completing the exterior with style.
What We’re Most Proud Of
The quality of this project speaks for itself. Every joint, every surface, and every transition reflects the care and craftsmanship RR Interior is known for. And the client? Proud to call it their staircase.
